The Reluctant Raw Foodist

Are you what you eat?

"I used to be a' foodie' and now I am a "foodist'"

Welcome to my health and wellbeing blog.

I’m not a raw foodist by choice. I was recently diagnosed as having a complicated autoimmune condition including severe Histamine Intolerance and a form of reactive arthritis. I have become hypersensitive to high histamine foods, pollen, dust and some everyday chemicals. My condition affects every area of my life.

I have Mast Cell Activation Disease (MCAD).

I was prescribed a low histamine diet and then a raw food diet to ease my symptoms and over the past 2 years I have overcome my reluctance to a new way of eating and living. I have been experimenting to combine the two diets and I have been learning how to eat a diet comprising mainly of low histamine raw fruit and vegetables and how to change the habits of a life time.

I am starting to feel healthier than I have ever been before. I have also lost 35 lbs in weight.

I will be sharing with you how I got here and I'll be exploring low histamine raw recipes, natural beauty products, how to cope with being "allergic to everything" and generally how to regain health and fitness and live life to the full despite my unusual condition!

Please feel free to message me with any suggestions, questions, or comments. I'd love to hear from you!

What you eat and drink matters. - Every mouthful, every meal, every day.

Breakfast can be glorious!

My breakfast on the go this morning:-

A smoothie of frozen watermelon chunks, a banana, some coconut water and a good handful of uncooked morning glory porridge oats (organic and actually itself a mix of 5 grains and 5 seeds)

I put all the rest into a small flask and took it with me…

My supper tonight

Steamed veggie mash made for my husband and elderly neighbour again today. I myself  still eat some cooked food.  Read here for more on why I still use my cooking pots ;)

Interesting. It is always worth doing your research.

High protein diets have been found in studies not to be healthy, contrary to popular belief. Putting to one side any consideration of the ethics of eating other animals which I am not debating here, my research has shown me that the longest lived and healthiest peoples eat a simple but highly nutritious diet of un commercially processed food (so no man made substances and preservatives) which is either wholly or mainly plants, so a diet rich in fruit, vegetables, green vegetables, nuts and seeds. Studies show that osteoporosis is prevalent in populations having high dairy consumption which flies in the face of what I was taught at school. It has also been found that when it comes to building and maintaining healthy immune systems green plants are king because the contain many phytonutrients that are only just being understood.

I find many foods including meat, fish and eggs to be highly inflammatory for me and cause me joint pain flare ups and skin rashes very quickly. Now what I put into my mouth today can make a difference as to whether I can stand upright and walk tomorrow or not. The pain is immense if I get it wrong and my body functions well if I get it right.

“Eating Junk Food is Another Form of Self Harm”….. This is one of my often re-blogged quotes on Tumblr. I get a lot of reactions to it, some very angry… Please read my full post here

This is for any of you  that suffer from fatigue and or anxiety. My friend Helen’s post (click here) is timely advice.

Helen is staying with me for the weekend helping me with my husband as his usual live in care giver is on holiday. It’s great to see a once very ill person now have so much energy. She is buzzing around the place at the moment cooking for us all as well as sorting out my husband’s clothes and helping him, as necessary, to get up, shower and dress…

To think I once used to have to look after her as she was confined to bed with CFS …
