The Reluctant Raw Foodist

Are you what you eat?

"I used to be a' foodie' and now I am a "foodist'"

Welcome to my health and wellbeing blog.

I’m not a raw foodist by choice. I was recently diagnosed as having a complicated autoimmune condition including severe Histamine Intolerance and a form of reactive arthritis. I have become hypersensitive to high histamine foods, pollen, dust and some everyday chemicals. My condition affects every area of my life.

I have Mast Cell Activation Disease (MCAD).

I was prescribed a low histamine diet and then a raw food diet to ease my symptoms and over the past 2 years I have overcome my reluctance to a new way of eating and living. I have been experimenting to combine the two diets and I have been learning how to eat a diet comprising mainly of low histamine raw fruit and vegetables and how to change the habits of a life time.

I am starting to feel healthier than I have ever been before. I have also lost 35 lbs in weight.

I will be sharing with you how I got here and I'll be exploring low histamine raw recipes, natural beauty products, how to cope with being "allergic to everything" and generally how to regain health and fitness and live life to the full despite my unusual condition!

Please feel free to message me with any suggestions, questions, or comments. I'd love to hear from you!

What you eat today has to …
…make your heart beat tomorrow and create new blood, renew your bone marrow, fuel your brain, ease your mind, make your lungs work, support your immune system, heal your skin (including that tattoo you had done yesterday), keep your digestive system working smoothly, lubricate your joints, repair and build your muscles, ………

What will you eat to do all that?

I thought you would like this. (I myself don’t use protein powder as i find it gives me a histamine overload)

I am obsessed with this smoothie…i’ve made one everyday this fall! SO simple and good.

I made a few small changes every time I’ve made it and this is the best tasting to me: I only used half a scoop of protein powder (it is too strong otherwise), and i used a full banana, added a little extra almond milk, and doubled the pumpkin serving. I also used the spices to taste instead of measuring.

My light reading LOL . When you no longer have a doctor who understands your condition then you do your own research!

It is really worth thinking about what you are putting into your body!

I’d always heard rumors of people making their own almond milk but I assumed it was a super difficult process. I was pleasantly surprised when I finally built up the courage to make it. It’s really easy, and oddly fun.

To make Raw Almond Milk:

What you’ll need:

1 cup raw almonds

2-3 cups of water

vanilla extract (optional)

blender

cheesecloth/muslin/pantyhose

What you’ll need to do:

Combine almonds and water. Let sit overnight. Blend together and pour into a jar lined with cheesecloth/muslin/pantyhose. Let this separate the milk from the leftover almond chunks. Make sure to give the cloth a good squeeze when you’re done to get as much out as you can. Refrigerate and enjoy!

My breakfast “detox” today .. Green smoothie ready to go in my blender - plenty of celery (4 or 5 sticks), 4 large leaves of lettuce, 1/2 cucumber, alfalfa spouts and some cress and I added a banana and a little water.

Remember I have a smoothie page on the front of my blog. Just click the link for recipe ideas x

Eating a vegetarian diet, walking (exercising) everyday, and meditating is considered radical. Allowing someone to slice your chest open and graft your leg veins in your heart is considered normal and conservative.

Do you think that highly processed “food” is produced with your health in mind or for the cash you spend on it? Let’s read the ingredients. Do you know what they all are? Can you pronounce them? Do you think your body actually knows what to do with them? Why are you eating them then?
